We had this bread tonight with minestrone soup. It was delicious. We all loved the texture of this bread and the molasses made the kitchen smell like gingerbread.
Pioneer Bread
Ingredients
- 1 .25 oz. package yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 cup hot milk (not boiling)
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 cup dark molasses
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup cold milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 5 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (we used unbleached flour because we didn’t have wheat flour)
Directions
In a small bowl, mix together yeast, sugar and warm water and let rise until foamy. In a large bowl combine hot milk, salt, molasses, and butter until dissolved. Add the cold milk, beaten egg, and yeast mixture. Stir. Add flour and stir until well blended. put into two well-greased loaf pans. Let rise about one hour. Bake at 350 degrees F . for about 35 minutes. Best when served warm.
